for the love of paper

Isn’t there something irresistable about paper? this page is centred around play with handmade paper. Not made by me I hasten to add – that’s a game I haven’t played (yet)!

It lends itself so well to roughly torn edgery, and as I discovered this week, tearing it when wet makes for even fluffier edges. Now I don’t remember what this paper is made from, it’s (I beleive) Indian and has super-long fibres. I painted it with Koh-I-Noor dye paints then gently tore it while it was still soggy.

The contrast on the magenta page really ZINGS!

I did the cut-out thing with a scalpel, the out-cut-bits then glued on top making multi-levelled layered shape, surrounded by doodle. With some more of the hairy edged paper and dyed envelopes glued to the underside of the page to show through the cut out holes, the next page was starting to take shape too. But more of that later.

The disparate parts of today’s page are beginning to merge and sit comforatbly in each other’s company.

Continuing the catch up

Day 11 is an either way up day. I like these days the best! I did this with white oil pastel as a resist to the splatters and splashes of watercolor and acrylics.

Day 12. Watercolor again. Not in the delicately conventional manner with subtlety and fragile grace. No. Slopped on with an inch wide brush. And some more theraputic splattering.

Day 13 watercolors on a background of collaged torn up paper. Sprinkled with water for added dappliness.

Day 14 fell right in the midst of my obsessive dyed paper thing making episode. One side of the page is encrusted in left overs!

Day 15 has a paper mosaic running right across, then watercolor and ink sploshes.

Day 16. Zing! How these colors make me grin like a wide-eyed fool! Alternating between yellows and turquoises (watercolor and ink), splashes and drips, water swish, and speed drying with hot air dryer to chase the puddlings about the paper.

Thursday’s page focused on utilising bits of the dyed paper through stacking n stitching, to exploring cut and torn shapes

The echoing shapes from previous pages are now just indentations. To continue the theme of the swirling frond shape that has lasted all week I cut a stencil from acetate and used this with ink and then acrylic glaze for a subtle sheeny shape here n there.
The roughed up surface, sheen of the glaze and the warm earthy colors put me in mind of a leathery effect.
