day last-but-one

While I was playing with my new inks last week, I developed some of these experiments on Thursday’s and Friday’s pages

the milky opacity of white ink dripped in transparent colored ink details the runs of the liquid

With a thick coating of white gesso on part of the page, scribed with pencil for deep furrows of swirl, the inks had routes to wander around

ink on wet white gesso reduces the saturation of blending colors

and new routes made with small watercolor brush, trying the page together as a whole.

swirls an spirals painted into the ink before it dries

The ‘day last-but-one’ thing – well, I’ll explain that bit later…. 😉

out of the sketchbook!

I’m so enjoying the page a day project, and the 12 in 12 (updates on that one soon) but it has meant that not so much art has been going on outside of the sketchbooks.

So I decided to venture out of my papery comfort zone and onto canvas. This is a first for me! It’s still a work in progress, but here’s how it’s starting out…

Being a deep canvas I want to incorporate the edges. With no particular plan I started out with acrylic glazes….

Starting out with collage bits the trial layouts begin then gluing commences!

Bit by bit…

More glaze to bring the bits together,

And some dyed scrim for a bit of texture

More paint, blending some of the raw edges together

More layers

More dyed scrim

And doodles in thread

I’ll post more as it develops, but so far I’m pleased with the way it’s coming together.

Mesh Mess

Y’know that sticky mesh tape stuff you stick plaster board together with? Yeh, sure you do! Here it is It’s meant for healing up wounds in walls n ceilings, but I have a much better use for it.
Made from fibreglass it’s super-tough and water resistant, and the tape has just the right ickiness to it. If you’ve seen my last few posts you’ll know where I’m going with this…

It makes for excellent griddy stenciling and painty fingers!

Close ups….

Sat urday

With the rest of the alphabet stencils cut (ok… v, w, x, y, z aren’t done yet… it’s a bit fiddly and I wanted to get on and play!) today’s page is all about sat sat saturday…

Layering up the letters, positive and negative cut-outs

Using a mix of acrylics, glazes, watercolors, gouache, pastels and charcoal to see how they work out

Frisket stencils part 2

I left the Frisket Stencils overnight, and yesterday morning I unpeeled the results…

See what I mean about the deckled edges? See close up, there’s the trace of an outline where the colors bled under the stencil.

At a midway point in the process I added more stencils over the already colored page, it’s made a ghostly image

I also began cutting an alphabet stencil. I was playing about with the cut out letters……

The letters placed at the edge of the page were on flatter paper so weren’t so prone to under-bleed of the ink – slightly crispier clean edges!

more experiments with rice

This (Wednesday’s page)

Plus this (salvaged dyed rice + hot water)

Equals this (thickly heaped rice on dry paper – may try wet paper next time – sprayed with a little more ink for good measure)

Plus drying time…………. produced this, gently dappled patterning.

visual echos

Thursday’s page focused on utilising bits of the dyed paper through stacking n stitching, to exploring cut and torn shapes

The echoing shapes from previous pages are now just indentations. To continue the theme of the swirling frond shape that has lasted all week I cut a stencil from acetate and used this with ink and then acrylic glaze for a subtle sheeny shape here n there.
The roughed up surface, sheen of the glaze and the warm earthy colors put me in mind of a leathery effect.

dot dot dot …

I’m so glad I posted the beginnings of Wednesday, cos all trace of that pink ricey start are now hidden beneath layers of acrylic dots!

Using sequin waste (punchinella) as a stencil, I’m most taken by the white dots, raised from the surface with nice crisp edges, made with thick goopy printing ink.

pink rice beginnings

Wednesday’s page started out with the results of playing with dye and rice. I poured rice onto the puddles of dye that’d spilled onto the page

As the rice absorbed the water in the dye, the concentration of the pigment outlined the grains.

I’ll post what happened to this page later…

trekking round this learning curve

Embarking on a project like a page a day, without an aim in sight, more a stretch of the journey traveled in a new fashion, has to be done without expectations.

I’ve doodled and made art since before I can remember.  Habitually, obsessively, because I love the process, and because (probably like all artists) I have to.

This is a different approach: One book that daily documents my trials and tribulations of the moment in color and shape, tone and imagination. Day in, day out. And then spilling out the results out into the interweb.

Having pondered if the pages might soon look samey, I’m starting to realise the range and variety of imagery that can be created.

By observing small slices of each page on screen, perspective changes. Fresh ideas emerge.

The inspiration from something touched upon days prior can be reignited afresh when a blank page beckons.

And an unexpected bonus is to be blessed by the delightful and encouraging words from folks who join along the way, Big thank you! 😀
