The Stretchiness of Time

2015 was tied up in this book, in the rigidity of one page: one week, when some weeks felt empty of expression and some pages felt too small for all that was flooding out of my imagination.

By mid year it had taken on a thick, heavy persona with paint all gooey and chewy and some weeks where no amount of layers would cover up the uncomfortable truths of ugly: a parallel to the world it was illustrating. Something intangibly off. Something meh. Some things I didn’t like, didn’t like confronting, didn’t like to witness. I didn’t want to relive, repeat, or even properly acknowledge.

The book served a purpose: A lesson in being a grown up is knowing when to persevere, and when to stop. I persevered. And when the year was up I was glad the book was full. Finished. Finally time to move on. Onto what next.

What next?

…And then a really long time seemed to pass, and I rested. A really long time that went quickly, and dragged slowly and passed in a flash.
Because Time is Weird like that…

I found myself cutting out shapes from magazine pages, scrap paper and junk mail. Something was stirring, I didn’t know what…

Last week I fell into a new facebook group run by the gorgeously art journally Orly Avineri. It was the catalyst I needed to jump into this new book.

I’ve got gesso under my nails and ink on my face again.

I feel like I’ve come home!

This book is different, there are no limitations and no rules.

Free to fly in and out, land a while –

‘Take a closer look’ –  the serendipity of the cut up.

– chat with my thoughts, flit off again.

It takes as long as it takes.

I’m getting more and more aware that by pouring out my unconscious I can steer myself through this life in a fashion not like anything else.

IMG_6958.jpg

It’s a compulsion.

IMG_6959.jpg

You get this too, right?

IMG_6970.jpg

Everything that was feeling stale and sludgy has dropped away since just this first page.

Life feels like spring time: new pages are beginning to blossom.

Twelvty-Twelve

Hey folks, remember the 12 in 12 in 12 project? One book: 12 colors in 12 months. Serendipitously conjured up in the year called ’12.

It’s been a little while since the last update, and as well as the recent (unseen) month-color-pages I’ve been hopping back in time to add little bits and things here and there.

So as we arrive in the 12th of the 12th of ’12, here comes the first of (…hey – guess how many…) daily snips of pages you’ve not seen yet!

Mixed Mish Mash

This weekend I spent playing with ink on gesso and acrylic medium.
Dripping, spraying, dribbling and seeing where the runs take it.
On wet and dry gesso, ink on wet inks, ink mixed in with medium, water on dry inks… all sorts of permutations. The circles in the gesso came from the end of the drinking straw I was blowing some ink about with. Good messy fun!

the other side of the folds

The other side of day / page 40 had folds already in place from which to make structure.

These created rectangles in which to hold doodles.

It was another page that spilled into its neighbour, repeated shapes formed along the far edge along with inky grass-green spillage and over spray.

Coming together as a whole, like this.

time marches forward

I was away for a couple of days, but the page a day project ticks along!

Friday’s page is here….

Being fascinated by mechanics, numbers and time, clocks are a constant source of interest to me.

Over the years I’ve often incorporated clock faces in art, and I thought it was about time I had one in this series 😉

I like the regularly spaced hour long segments, contrasting the unequally balanced chunks of time into which we split our days

An hour spent waiting in traffic is so much longer than an hour spent in the company of ppl we love. An hour of sleep is not the same size of time as an hour at work…

……………I’ll catch you up with the others in a bit 🙂

Fragmented Binary

I’ve been playing over ideas of barcodes. Visually, I love their zebra-patterning. Here I’m toying with the aesthetic nonsense they produce when ‘broken’. The warm analogue fuzziness contrasted by the unforgivingly On/Off-ness of a digital world. The fragments of the binary decay merge into the familar, natural.

Ingredients:

White Gesso
Assorted found barcodes
Drawing Ink
White watercolor
Palette Dregs
Coffee

Balanced in blues

Day 37. As summer has finally arrived in the UK the balancing cool blues refresh the eyes and the soul. It’s watercolor again today.

Day 38. A rummage through my box of ideas produced these photos of anonymous Victorian ladies, in the classically wistful pose of the age. Their eyes and details are enhanced with ink and graphite.

Day 39 More cool blues, a day tinged with sadness as I had to say a final goodbye to my long time furry friend, Woozle-cat. Which led to this outpouring of words.

Day 40. Oh how I love these colors! They lift my spirits and warm my soul!

Day 41 finishes this book, I’ll catch you up with this later on, and then we reach Book Three, which begins today!
