Seeing through new eyes

Over the last couple of years, my perspective has shifted. Like after an epiphany, I began to see differently. Expectations and assumptions either altered or vanished.

I’ve always enjoyed the process, creating, painting, etc-ing…. but inevitably it would go wrong and be set aside (that paper/fabric/material etc was expensive/so nice before I ruined it… for these reasons I can’t through it away. Haunted by a residual value… It must remain as a warning not to repeat this mistake. It must fester. It can sit there stewing in guilt, shame, regret). Weeks, months, years would pass. These ghosts of ideas would move house with me. Boxed up past failures.

Art school taught me to question these feelings, the judgemnents I made. Finally I found out why I’d kept so many of these past attempts: they weren’t wrong, they just weren’t finished!. They took a detour from the path I’d imagined for them, but that didn’t mean their journey was over.

Through these ‘new eyes’, I see possibility in so many places. This week I’ve been playing with water – as bits of dyed paper lie about my work space, often splashed and used to dry wet brushes, I came to notice how the dried watermarks disrupted the pigments of the dye/ink. This had to be investigated further…..!

Water brushes are the perfect tool for this!

The moral to this story? Keep playing! Keep on swimming! 😀

Quilty Time

See what I did there? *snigger*

September’s just round the corner and me and the Inner Kid are looking forward to some cosiness. We reeeeeally want a velvet quilt in which to snuggle.

Now, something like 15 years ago we made one. It was a patchwork of scavanged velvet from car boot sales and charity shops, excuses, impatience and scant attention to detail. I didn’t have such a balanced relationship with IK back then, so handed over almost all the decision making, which culminated in a lovely colorful quilt, full of hurried inaccuracies, apology and shonky stitching. It began to develop holes almost straight away.

Fast forward another 10 years or so: We decide to re-incarnate/up-cycle said quilt into covers for floor cushions. Some long while after this they ended up in that limbo of ‘waiting for next idea’ space. The ragbag. The months of scavanging fabric, sorting and choosing, cutting into squares, sneezing from the fluff were so long past, but still fresh enough that we couldn’t totally let go.

Fast forward again to yesterday: I left IK sleeping off the excitement of the previous day and snuck upstairs with scissors and freshly washed quilt/cushion cover remnants.

Sssssshhhhh…. don’t tell, but I actually began trimming down the pieces to the same size (yes, measured not guessed)…. layed them out on the (ironed) backing fabric and pinned them. Just like a proper grown up would do!!!

I’ll post up some picks as we go along – meanwhile IK is yelling in the background: I have to paint the dream I just woke from. QUICK before it escapes!

on your marks…. get set…

I can feel a big burst of creativity welling up, like a wind-up toy with its springs stretched to capacity, ideas are elbowing each other to get my attention.

The air is filled with static, thunder creeping up, gathering pace, a little flicker of flash heralds the storm. Sparse, fat raindrops. More up there still to fall.

I have to run, I’ll be back with you after the downpour/out-pouring 🙂

Ephemeral Gecko

If you’ve been following these posts you’ve maybe wondered about the name. So I’ll let you into a little secret…

Ephemeral Gecko resulted from pairs of fave words randomly combined til I hit on a combination that yeilded no Googlings.

In a serendipitous way, the 2 words seemed suited to their purpose: Sharing the fleetingly ephemeral art on the journey to a finished piece – my initial plan for this blog. And my fascination with the Gecko, the +800 variations of this lizard come in a wonderful assortment of colors and sizes, many of which are nocturnal, much like my art.

Fresh from a recent paper-dying harvest, I’ve got many little stashes of paper scraps like this…

Have we gone off on another tangent here? Not exactly, bear with me here.

Inspired by “musings of a muse, dave’s diary”, last week I felt compelled to manifest an Ephemeral Gecko in physical form.

(I don’t know where these ideas come from, but have learnt not to question, it only delays the inevitable.)

He’s already found a home in the page a day book…. but I suspect he could be the first of many.

moments of reflection

I enjoy my work; I’m self-employed so my time can be flexible, and while it’s not exciting it’s challenging and variable enough to be interesting.

I do my best not to snark when things don’t go my way, cos I’m mindful that so many ppl don’t have work, or have work that they relentlessly grumble about (with OR without good reason! 😉 ).

My work is totally non-artsy, and as such gives me a good ‘feet on the floor’ contrast to my creativity. Yin and Yang. It works.

Over the last few months I’ve spent more and more of my non-work time here in the world of WordPress. Daily I encounter more inspiration, ideas, shared thoughts and wishes, and overwhelming generosity of spirit than I ever would have imagined.

Out of world full of ppl, I must say you guys are really quite special.

Big love to you all! 😀 X

Liebster Blog Award

A very big (and belated) thank you to WeelilWimsy for awarding me the Liebster Blog Award. Wow!

With this award originating in Germany, the Liebster Blog Award recognizes fresh bloggers with less than 200 followers. By accepting the award, it would be nice for the blogger to:

1. Acknowledge the person that gave the award and link back to their blog.

2, Copy and paste the award to your own site.

3. Share 5 of your choice blogs to award and let them know by commenting on their blog.

How cool is that!

Now, the reason it’s taken me so many days to reciprocate is partly cos I had no idea how to tell how many followers you folks have… But then I don’t really do rules unless common sense kicks in and give me good reason to. So I made up my own criteria: these guys have all generously donated some of their time to visit me here and encourage me along my bloggy path. If you like my stuff I just know you’ll love theirs too!

Here (and why) are my nominated five faves:

  1. John Clinock’s Art rat Cafe a place to see an excellent and eclectic mix of visual art combined with inspiring and encouraging words
  2. Wai-Yuk Kennedy Textile Art here’s where to go to see some exquisitely crafted textile creations, inspirational photos, and much more!
  3. gonerustic – artworks by rita summers
another mouth-watering selection of beautifully handcrafted textile art.
  4. From the Boudoir – Textile Surprises From The Bedroom Not just wonderful ideas manipulated into incredible creations, but presented by one of my favest double acts: Jule and Dave.
  5. MyfanwyHart.com
fellow color-junkie, creator of delicious fabrics and threads, and queen of more than one blog, so you may know Myfanwy by another of her names!
  6. Spaark ~ Artistically Afflicted another kindred spirit who juggles life and art. And then more art. Because we have to!
  7. Fi’s corner Magnificent Mix of mixed media. Mmmmm!

Of course the most observant amongst you will spot I picked 7 ‘fave five’ blogs. Well, if rules are worth breaking, they’re worth breaking properly, right? 😉

the life cycle of a shirt

I’m an avid recycler. I was brought up before recycling was so easy – we have regular collections of waste paper and glass, not to mention the big bins to deposit unwanted plastic, aluminium foil and textiles in carparks and the such. But I was taught not to be wasteful from the youngest age. Be imaginative and think what something can be repurposed into.

A shirt has a life-cycle after its time as a shirt:

Unwashable stains? no problem for a decorating shirt. Brushed your elbow on the newly painted gloss paint? is still ok.

It becomes a gardening shirt. One sleeve gets caught on brambles and ripped? We really don’t care. Like a snake sheds its skin, a shirt sheds too, and leaving in its wake floor cloths and rags for mucky cleaning. Servicable scraps are useful for textile projects and test stitching and collage and patchwork (and more!).

Even the littlest cloth bits feed the clean rag-bag for snipping up into stuffing for cushions, made-up animals and all manner of stuffables. (I find snipping is as theraputic as it is productive, and goes well with TV or radio listening)

Buttons are harder to destroy through overuse, but will come off and be reusable in a future something.

Oh yeh, and that wholesome feel of self-satisfaction? you get to keep that for free! 😉
