Next layers: more mark making

I simply do not distinguish between work and play.”

― Mary Oliver.

Yester-post we looked at first layers. Now I’m building on those foundations with some variations of these themes.

These are the techniques I use in my art journals and mixed media pieces. Whatever I’m making I like to work quickly and without any planning. It’s even easier without the distraction of choosing colors to use:

The first piece I pick up + the first paint or ink that comes to hand + the first tool I grab. It always surprises me how serendipity brings new combinations of patterns together.

While color is restricted, mark making tools are not. I don’t limit myself to paint brushes and *proper* art tools (although I like using these too).

Like a lot of folk these days, I’m trying to opt out of plastic use as much as possible, but it still turns up uninvited through packaging and whatnot. We know that re-use is more efficient than recycling.

For all that is bad about plastic, the up side to its indestructible nature is it makes very durable art making tools that are easy to keep clean and seldom need replacing. I’ve had some of the stuff I use for years and you’d never know.

These are a few of my favourite mark making things:

  • A hair comb.
  • Plastic cards – old bank cards etc.
  • Bits of bubble wrap, plastic bag and packaging.
  • Plastic netting – the type you get oranges and lemons in.
  • Plastic forks, knives, spoons etc. (especially forks)
  • Old pens that have run out of ink (ball points, felt pens, markers) – and their lids for perfect little circles!
  • Knitting needles.
  • String, feathers, elastic bands.

You’ll likely see all these things (and more) come up in my process videos over the coming weeks and months, they all make their own characteristic marks, some more predictably than others.

Next layers made in Yellow for TWELVTY 2020

I’m beginning to combine these pieces now with collage, fabric and stitching, They’re evolving from scrappy bits of paper with smears of paint and scribbles into curious little pieces of art.

This heap of part done bits and pieces is on my desk right now.

Yellow in progress.

My adventures with yellow finishes at the end of the month, when I skip round to the next color in the wheel. Next post I’ll show you the *finished* {for now} stage, and explain what I mean by this too 😉

Every month this year I am making a series of pieces in just one color, so at the end of the year I can combine them into one big multicolored work.

I’m sharing my process throughout this adventure in this blog.

I’d love for you to join me. TWELVTY is open to everyone, and better yet, it’s free! Sign up for my newsletter to find out more and get your free TWELVTY guide ebook

First Layers

“Start where you are, use what your have, do what you can.”

Arthur Ashe

The magic of mixed media art making comes from the layers.

First layers can be marks made in paint or pen, they can be collage or textural. Sometimes the whole surface is covered, sometimes it’s just a few marks to break up that beginning expanse of nothing.

scribbles and doodles break up the space on the blank paper.

When you keep in mind that what goes down on the first layer will likely get covered up, it’s much easier to feel free to experiment.

first layers don’t need to be pretty!

I don’t strive to make something beautiful, I just play. Letting one idea feed the next and seeing where it leads.

Experiment by combining patterns of mark making on different surfaces – thin copier paper reacts very differently to paint and ink than watercolor paper, or tissue paper, or fabric. Investigate some of the infinite possibilities!

I like having a few pieces on the go at the same time. Ideas cross pollinate between them, and I can swap from one to another while the layers dry.

Crumple or fold paper so the color can seep into the creases.

Consider how many ways there are to apply color to surface. Paint brushes are just the beginning, some of my favourite tools are not conventional things you’ll find in the art supply store 😉

Watch how the first layers of the first color of Twelvty began.

Full Circle

We’ve just arrived full circle on the latest trip around the color wheel that is TWELVTY, and I’m so excited how this project turned out!

Catch my newsletter this weekend to be first to see the completed 3D color wheel

In previous years of TWELVTY, my year long trip around the color wheel, I’ve created an art journal to document the process (you can see them  here & here)

2018 is the third time I’ve repeated the experiment. It never ceases to amaze me how much deeper this color exploration can take me into a creative flow.

This year I wanted to make something newsomething more dynamic. So this year my 12 color project took the form of part art journal, part 3d mixed media sculptures.

12 Reasons

I have to impose strict ‘signing up to’ rules on myself, before I skit off in a giddy rush, happily clicking on any promise of more color and fun and artsy inspiration in my life… I don’t expect any different from you.

I have to impose strict ‘signing up to’ rules on myself, before I skit off in a giddy rush, happily clicking on any promise of more color and fun and artsy inspiration in my life… but resources and time are finite, right?

So I don’t expect any different from you.

But here’s the thing, guys, I don’t want you to miss out on TWELVTY 2018. I’m not sure if I’ll run TWELVTY next year, it takes all year and whole load of prepping for, so this could be a now or never moment!

Here are 12 reasons why this is a chance you don’t want to miss:

  1. We focus on a single color over three weeks, and we explore all the aspects of this color – so you have a wealth of content and information to choose from, but you’re not obliged in any way to ‘do it all’! You take the parts that interest you, and the rest you can leave, for another time, or just leave them!
  2. Unlike other creative courses, you don’t get specific assignments; instead you get a framework and guides to use in your usual creative projects, so you can integrate what we explore in TWELVTY into your usual creative practice.
  3. I ran TWELVTY for the first time last year, and over half of last years group have rejoined for a second trip around the color wheel!
  4. This year it’s way more polished, I’ve tweaked the format and got two creative projects lined up that will run all through the year that I encourage you join in as well.
  5. I reduced the price from last year! – even though the previous group all said it was great value, I don’t want anyone to miss out because of the cost. It’s just £97 for the full year, with an option to pay in 3 instalments. Just click here!
  6. We’re a small group, so your voice will be heard. You can feel totally cool with sharing photos of what you find and make, and you can feel totally cool if you prefer to watch and learn from the sidelines. There’s no pressure.
  7. The time commitment is flexible: I send you the content at the start of each color segment, and share my process in the creative project the following week. It’s your’s to go through in your own time. If you have 2-3 hours a week you could easily fit TWELVTY into your schedule!
  8. We have a private Facebook group, so if social media is your jam then you can use this platform to get to know artists and creative folk from around the world. I’ve made some of my best friends through groups like this.
  9. You’ll build on the knowledge you already have about color, its use, symbolism and its history, and develop a collection of resources that you can keep forever, and keep coming back to.
  10. There’s no better way to hone a craft or creative skill than to restrict the color you use. It stretches the imagination way beyond it’s usual edges!
  11. TWELVTY is what you make it, but it’s much more than just color! We explore connections and develop a deeper understanding of our creative process as we go. (This is my third time of a year long color project: I’m still learning, and I enjoy it more every time.)
  12. Actively noticing the color around us hones our focus. The world is so busy, the days and weeks and months slip by. This is a way to slow down the pace and properly see the beauty that is everywhere when we learn how to see it.

So guys – we begin the introduction on Monday!

Are you in?

Join the adventure here!

Meanwhile, you can always keep up with my colorful antics by signing up to my newsletter. It’s monthly right now, but I’m switching that up to weekly next month.

Color Connections

Yesterpost I showed you a black & white photo of a paint doodle and asked for guesses what the ‘real’ colors are.

I kept you waiting longer than I intended, only cos sometimes the days gallop by and all of a sudden it’s much later. So here we are, and here it is!

Thanks for playing along- it was really interesting to know what colors you ‘saw’.

Color is a real fascination of mine, and the more I learn the more intrigued I become.
