May was a month long exploration of the color Blue.
As spring unfolds into summer the skies are blue, and the soothing cool tones bring a welcome contrast to the heat of the sun.

Blue
Blue is the second of the primary colors we’re visiting in this exploration of the color wheel. Primaries are unique in that they cannot be made by combining other colors. The are one of the three foundational colors from which all other colors are derived.
Blue has another special quality in that it retains its purity no matter how much white or black are added: from the palest to the darkest, blue remains recognisably blue.
“The deeper the blue becomes, the more strongly it calls man towards the infinite, awakening in him a desire for the pure and, finally, for the supernatural… The brighter it becomes, the more it loses its sound, until it turns into silent stillness and becomes white.”
~ Wassily Kandinsky

Show ‘n’ Tell
For TWELVTY this year I’m making a series of small mixed media pieces for each color. They range in size from postcard size (ish) down to really-weeny-small.
At the end of the project I’ll assemble them into some bigger multicolored somethings. For now I’m focussed on one color at a time, and playing with ideas. Every month I’ll share some of my process with you here in this blog.
Here is how my month of blue took shape.
These are some of my favourite bits I worked on during the month of Blue. Some feel like finished pieces, and some might get combined together when I return to them at the end of the year.
For now I’m setting these aside in readiness to move on to the next color: Blue-Violet

Follow my journey around the color wheel as next month is all about BLUE-VIOLET – the moody moonlit tones of indigo, and subtle shades of bluebell & lavender.
