Ephemeral Gecko
Nothing like beginning something new to remind me of something unfinished.

I began this little book of collages in the summer, and this week I decided to call it done.
My intention in this book was *white space*
Usually I’ll keep squeezing in more and more detail, but something I love seeing in othersโ art is a balance of muchness and quiet places.
I decided to rein in my muchness, just to see what happened…

It was not easy!

I soon realised the only way for this to work with my freight train brain is by distraction:
I need to move right onto something else, cos thereโs no stopping the urge to maximimalize.
Consequently this book was only allowed out to play while a lot of other stuff was in progress ๐
Here are the finished (as in – don’t let me go back to fill in the spaces) pages!
Lovingly curated collections of colourful, multi-layered, painted papers. Perfect for art journals, collage, mixed media art.

Hot on the heels of last week’s flip through from the Book of Days, I bring you Part Five
I often talk about the tidal quality of creativity.
There are times when the ideas and energy to dive into their exploration is abundant.
Other times we feel beached and deserted with all that wants to be made, written and invented all the way over there on the horizon.
Following this analogy, I’m welcoming the inspiration back after a long spell of nothing but metaphorical driftwood and dry seashells to play with.
Hot on the heels of last week’s flip through from the Book of Days, I bring you Part Five:
Be first to see these flip thru vids + find out more about the ideas behind the art in my monthly-ish studio musings newsletter ๐

In July 2020 I began this enormous sketchbook, with a new double page spread every week. I posted a few flip throughs in the first year, and although the project is still merrily trotting along at a spread a week, I fell out of the habit of posting updates.
Today I set myself the task to root about behind the metaphorical sofa in my mind and show you some of what’s been going on in my world of art making. Beginning with a flip through of the enormous sketchbook.
This brings us to page 73, although in real time I’ve already clocked up >100 pages, so I’ve more to show you yet. *Watch this space!*
On top of this, it’s been a reeeallly long time since I posted a studio musings newsletter, apologies for radio silence, this is on the list to be revived in the next few days!

Color is an integral part to all types of creativity, it influences our moods and emotions, itโs linked with our memories.

Colors have been assigned meanings and connections throughout history and around the world. Sometimes these overlap and sometimes they are contradictory. Color is a great metaphor for so many aspects this wildly paradoxical trip we call life.

Looking out for colors is an invitation to observe the world around you on a new level.
It adds to the richness of the everyday places and things, and brings back a childlike sense of fun and wonder.ย

All these images are everyday things, in isolation not that interesting, but together they can make a patchwork of colors.
Art is everywhere when you begin to really look for it.

When we tune our eyes in to notice the colors around us, life becomes a little bit brighter and more vibrant.
Month by month through the year I’m exploring one color at a time in a project I call TWELVTY.
Beginning with yellow I’ll share what I’ve been making here in this blog.
If you’d like to create your own version of TWELVTY then sign up for my Studio Musings Newsletter & get your free TWELVTY Guide ebook.

It’s that time of year again , Instagram is full to bursting of 100 day projects. I love the variety of ideas that populate this challenge. This is my third year of participating. ๏ปฟ

It’s that time of year again, Instagram is full to bursting of 100 day projects. I love the variety of ideas that populate this challenge.
In 2017 I missed the start date by a long way. I didn’t know this was an annual event, or anything much at all except it was a hashtag that intrigued me. I took the next 6 months to complete 100 daily pages of art journal.
In 2018 I was all amped up to go from day one. I decided on a hugely ambitious project. I even wrote myself a manifesto. For real! By day sixty-something I was utterly spangled and my group of 100-day-canvasses* are still ‘resting’ in a not quite complete stage.
*that’s 5 canvasses for the 100 days. Not 100 canvasses. I’m over ambitious, for sure, but not that much…
I’ll circle back round to them some day. When they’re ready.
This year I had no plans to join the project.
I love watching everyone else’s projects in all their iterations play out and develop. I’m fascinated by the broad reach of the themes; the devotion and the grace; the patience and the determination. [Is this you? Leave a comment below with your IG handle so I can follow you too ๐ ]
My 2019 is a time of stepping away and of setting aside, I’ve been deliberately disengaging from social media, opting out and resisting. I’m doing my darnedest to play more offline than online to help de-frazzle my achy brain.
This year I planned watch and absorb instead.

So no-one was more surprised than I was to find myself getting all zinged up on April 2nd – day one of the project – when I determined the thing I wanted to do more than anything else was to join in again!

I made a commitment to myself already to make some sort of art every day in this little Moleskine book. It’s been with me over a year and I especially while I’m still a bit high on the fun of the sketchbook project book I just completed (more on that soon) this feels like a gift of accountability- momentum I just can’t ignore.
Will I last out for 100 days? I’ll post updates here as and when [ or you can check the daily doodles I add on Instagram ] for now I’m enjoying it, and that’s all that matters to me ๐
Meanwhile, If you want to be first to know about my colorful antics on and offline, join up for monthly news direct by email.

“Soul Food” Book Launch Blog Tour & Giveaway. A few years ago I took a year long online course called IGNITE… This is where I first met artist and writer Carol Lowell. I was entranced as I watched Carol’s idea for a book ‘Soul Food’ blossom and take shape.
A few years ago I took a year long online course called IGNITE run by the lovely Connie Solera of Dirty Footprint Studio, the following year I was invited to return as a peer mentor to the new students through their year of learning and discovery.
In these two years I met some wonderful, inspiring, creative women from around the world, who have become great friends.
This is where I first met artist and writer Carol Lowell. I was entranced as I watched Carol’s idea for a book ‘Soul Food’ blossom and take shape. So I’m super excited to announce her book’s publication, and to have her as my guest to tell you more about it.

Thanks for hosting me, Mixy!ย I’m excited to share with you and your audience my new book โSoul Foodโ, the contest and Free Book Offer that goes along with my upcoming book launch March 26, 27, 28ย onย amazon.ca,ย amazon.comย and, for International orders, on my website!
It is a passion of mine, and most of the artists I know. We all have our favourite colours that we are drawn to time and again, yet every colour tells and inspires a story all its own.
When I was a kid, settling on a favourite colour was way too limiting. So I chose rainbows! And the collection of rainbow items began … pillows and bedding, mugs and stationery … even a pair of denim overalls (does this date me?). The magic in nature where light refracted through raindrops, or crystals, creating this wonder of colour made my heart swell. It still does!
Our natural world brings so many treasures and delights … feasts for our eyes! But we need to create time and stillness to be aware of all the magic that not only surrounds us, but is within us.
In my book, โSoul Foodโ I wanted to support people, whether they are artists or not, to create a daily practice that allows them to know themselves better and to get in touch with their hearts. Having fun playing with colour is a key to following your heart.
When I created my book, Soul Food, I knew from the start that I wanted it to be in full colour … to welcome the participants. It is just too yummy in full colour!!
As a self-published author/artist, the cost of 312 pages of full colour was pretty massive. But I would not compromise, and so I followed my heart and did what I knew in my heart mattered. The pages of Soul Food, that welcome and encourage the mark-making of the bookโs owner, bringing their own sense of colour, is just what this book is for. The journey of discovery is as unique as each one of us. And each Soul Food book, will uniquely reflect its owner.
Her year-long online course, Twelvty, confirms her dedication and understanding of colour. She encourages and inspires her own version of self discovery through the deep-dive into colour. And Mixyโs various feasts for the eyes are so yummy too! I am grateful to be participating on this journey with her and other creative souls.
May bringing colour into your daily life inspire you, bring pleasures and even, perhaps, make your heart swell. This is just some of the magic available to us when we pay attention!
With love and best wishes,

Soul Food is a 90 Day Journey of Self Discovery While Building Nourishing Habits
Soul Food is an interactive โplay bookโ to help establish heart-centred habits in a gentle and positive way.
The first 30 days focuses attention on gratitudes, doing something you love, your Top 3 Priorities for the day, as well as some mandala colouring to help relax and rejuvenate you.
The next 30 days expands the practice by adding body and health focus, as well as a beginning meditation practice.
From there, the final 30 days builds another layer of your foundational practice by adding daily journaling prompts to take you even further inward for some soul reflection. ย Towards the final days, you have the opportunity to create your own mandala designs.
Each month, as you gradually and progressively build on the previous monthโs groundwork, you can easily deepen your communication within. You will discover your soul voice that is as unique as you are.
After 90 days, you will have created a daily practice that suits you, your interests, and your schedule. Each book will become as unique as the person working through it and making their marks. Most important of all is who you will become while on this journey!!
