textile adventures

I’m always striving to find new directions of creativity to explore (given that I can’t settle on any preference, might as well try as much as I can find).

Last weekend I spent learning the art of machine embroidery from the very inspirational Gina Ferrari. I’d only ever dabbled with this sort of machining before but by the end of the weekend course I’d produced a few samples and things, including this.

Not to mention full-to-the-brim with new ideas! 😀

tissue paper runs!

Just a little by the way from usual antics, you know how the color in tissue paper runs when it gets wet?

Scrumpled up and spritzed with water, then squished between sketchbook pages and left to dry overnight got these results

I used dark and mid blue tissue, so as well as staining the book pages they also added color to each other and have gone in the collage-scraps box …. another time I think I’ll try this on watercolor paper, got a feeling that’ll be a cool effect.

out of the sketchbook!

I’m so enjoying the page a day project, and the 12 in 12 (updates on that one soon) but it has meant that not so much art has been going on outside of the sketchbooks.

So I decided to venture out of my papery comfort zone and onto canvas. This is a first for me! It’s still a work in progress, but here’s how it’s starting out…

Being a deep canvas I want to incorporate the edges. With no particular plan I started out with acrylic glazes….

Starting out with collage bits the trial layouts begin then gluing commences!

Bit by bit…

More glaze to bring the bits together,

And some dyed scrim for a bit of texture

More paint, blending some of the raw edges together

More layers

More dyed scrim

And doodles in thread

I’ll post more as it develops, but so far I’m pleased with the way it’s coming together.
