Do you have daily practices?
I kinda do, but my progress moves like a caterpillar – that scrunching-stretching motion, so while it averages out as daily, it might not always be technically daily.
This is the thing: – I’m acknowledging this now instead of berating myself. I’m learning my rhythms and working within them. I’m letting the process be the lesson.

Since the start of this year I’ve been adding to this book of ‘daily’ doodles. Mostly every day I complete a 1″square. The days when I don’t, I return to, always within a day or two, and as I doodle I reflect back on that day. Sometimes there’s a word or a shape or a scrap of something to glue into the square. Everyday is similar, yet every day is unique.
It’s another unfolding metaphor.
It’s wonderful and I’m not a ‘rule’ kind of person, so doing what you do whenever you get it done seems like the perfect way to do whatever you’re doing. Again…this is beautiful.

lol – I’ve become totally ‘unruly’ since I Started this. Totally liberating! And again, thank you! X

These squares are a reflection of you, of how you feel, of what you are becoming, of the process you are journeying into. The most important thing is you are doing this for you, to celebrate, to commemorate, to dedicate, to own and recognize. Thank you for sharing them.

Don’t you love how creative visual artists get when they need to entice themselves into the discipline of working each day, even if it is just a one inch square! I’ve seen so many variations on this and it always impresses me, the authentic loyalty we all have to the idea of the discipline of work. Your form of daily practice I like, I mean even I should be able to structure my time to paint a one inch square daily…and your image page works so well its inspiring…I may get into it

I think as artists, especially in the modern world, we embody rebellion. Logically we know there’s always time and capability to make room for 1 inch of art. But we don’t like to be told what to do, right? Even by our own intentions!
I’m noticing this caterpillar movement applies to many aspects of my life. It averages over a week but breaks down into periods of All and Nothing with little middle ground between!

I was just journaling about my authentic rhythm and not focusing on what I haven’t done. I am doing a lot right in my life and that I need to focus on, not put so much emphasis on the things I don’t do perfectly. It is our rhythm that we need to understand! Part of that is putting down the “I should”. This is a great post!!!

thanks, my friend. Since I posted this I’ve become more aware of this pattern in other aspects of my life. Art seems to be a good allegory to help me notice these things.
I like the saying ‘stop shoulding on things!’ – I tell myself this when I have bad lapses into the grownup/martyr side of my character!

Hi,
I love it when l find other artist’s creating things the same as me but a little different! Yeh. I have always loved watching what you do. your doodles are gorgeous. 🙂 x Do you find you can remember how you felt that day by just looking at your doodles?

to some degree – I certainly remember the overall feel, sometimes relaxed sometimes hectic and busy, I think that shows easily. Sometimes I use just one word and that brings it back. One day just says ‘shhh’, I was overtired and it was a day of enforced rest and calm. I wonder if it will stay fresh in my memory further into the year – I’ll have to wait and see!
