maroon, magenta, pomegranate & plum.
The range of Red-Violet covers colors from the coolest side of the red tones, to the warmest edge of the violet-purples.
Red-Violet holds a special place in my heart. It feels like decadence and luxury – rich maroon and wine coloured velvet and satin. It feels like the bright joyful headiness of the flowers of a fuchsia, bougainvillea and rhododendron.
‘Comprised of 2 parts Red and 1 part Blue, this tertiary colour lies “hidden” between Red and Violet.
Therefore MAGENTA is both the end and the beginning of the Light Spectrum – representing the Alpha and the Omega – the fullest expression of Divine Love.’
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “Theory of Colours”

Show ‘n’ Tell
For TWELVTY this year I’m making a series of small mixed media pieces for each color. They range in size from postcard size (ish) down to really-weeny-small.
At the end of the project I’ll assemble them into some bigger multicolored somethings. For now I’m focussed on one color at a time, and playing with ideas. Every month I’ll share some of my process with you here in this blog.
Here is how my month of red-violet took shape.
These are some of my favourite bits I worked on during the month of Red-Violet. Some feel like finished pieces, and some might get combined together when I return to them at the end of the year.
For now I’m setting these aside in readiness to move on to the next color: Red.
