Violet & Purple
Violet and Purple are words that are often used interchangeably, they define the place between red and blue in the spectrum. So I’m going to use both!
Violet is the color at the end of the spectrum of visible light between blue and the invisible ultraviolet (UV). Violet a spectral color, meaning it has a defined space in the spectrum. It was one of the seven colors defined by Sir Isaac Newton in 1672.
Purple is an additive color, meaning it’s created by adding red and blue, by paint, pigment or dye. Purple is more commonly used to describe any hue falling between blue and red.
(There’s a really good explanation of the difference here, by artist Denise Soden)

Show ‘n’ Tell
For TWELVTY this year I’m making a series of small mixed media pieces for each color. They range in size from postcard size (ish) down to really-weeny-small.
At the end of the project I’ll assemble them into some bigger multicolored somethings. For now I’m focussed on one color at a time, and playing with ideas. Every month I’ll share some of my process with you here in this blog.
Here is how my month of violet & purple took shape.
These are some of my favourite bits I worked on during the month of Violet & Purple. Some feel like finished pieces, and some might get combined together when I return to them at the end of the year.
For now I’m setting these aside in readiness to move on to the next color:Red-Violet
