Water In Parallel (part 2)

Last post I had just constructed these thick papery substrates on which I had not the foggiest idea what was to happen.

Which is a really exciting place to be!

When in doubt, I like to make a big move: a doing or an undoing, doesn’t really matter which. Time to make a change: lose the colors.

They were there to serve a purpose: get focused on the theme of Water. Now move along! IMG_3959

Diluted white gesso on scrumpled paperis just lush – all those lovely rivulets and wrinkles were already there, but they needed shining up and showing off!

Next installment coming soon….!

Playing about with a bit of animation…

Last year of college I dabbled a bit in film and animation. Oh my giddy days – this is a thing of wondrous possibility!!  Instant  LOVE for  having the dimensions of time and sound as possibilities In art.

So a year on I’m reintroducing it, re-remembering the skills and techniques, re inspiring some of the ideas.

Bear with, I’m rusty (and only played a little to begin) but it’s coming back to me. I plan to use these butterflies as my test film, see what else I can make them into. Watch this space!!

Behind the times 5/52

Last week was such a wild week, full speed ahead into the future. …. Big mental adventures, idea exploration, culmination and loose end tying. And then the massive full moon on Tuesday. Maybe that’s why it’s taken until now to post last night week’s page.

This is where it started out: a splurge of words came tumbling… so many they needed watering down. (Literally)

Edit/note to self: a daemon from a daemon (transformed)

220px-Draper-Lamia

I’d spent the weekend at Jamie Catto’s Transforming Shadows workshop. I’ll post more about that separately once it’s settled more in my head – suffice to say for now, transformation occurred!  And it led me back to a bit of face drawing, I haven’t done this in a while…

The theme of the workshop was centred around befriending inner demons. As each day the page evolved the faces developed, coming more into their own. And the big full moon started to dominate.

Something tribal feeling began to show. I’ve had an increasing sense I need to find my Tribe. And the page seems to be reinforcing that. (Gotta love the way art unfolds answers to questions you didn’t know you were asking)

As a marker of time and achievement, the final additions: collaged left over bits of the project I completed this week, oh and a big ole FIFTY. Cos guess how many kilos I lifted at the gym this week? 😉 Gotta love a round number milestone!

Integrity & Solidarity

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

You may have seen this video, it’s been spinning about on the web this week, by an artist in distress.

As I watched it I felt the enormity of all it represents well up inside. I wanted to reactively repost and type angrily at the world. But instead I’m sharing it as a message of solidarity, from one artisan to another. From one who has tried, been dismayed, discouraged, ridiculed and dismissed, but been unable to stop. Like a river, creativity can be dammed up, but will always find a way through. The weight of the water being the support this video has garnered.

This darling soul is baring her heart, and it touched me so strongly. She creates beautiful, wearble art. She just wants to make a living. And most importantly, despite the unsolicited opinions of the ignorant masses who shout their unsolicited opinion and sour grape flavoured vitriol, will (I hope) continue to follow her passion. She speaks for many of us.

To everyone who’s living this pain – the anguish (too strong a word? no, I don’t think so) – of having to justify your burning urge to make and share and not defend and rationalise, but just to do. Keep doing, keep making, keep going. We love you, we respect you, we need you to keep going.

Signs Everywhere

If I said you: look up from the screen, look about you for something blue. You’d look cast your gaze about and suddenly so many things in your field of vision are blue. You never noticed how many blue things there are about, right?

It’s not a blue thing thing, it’s a noticing thing.

Until you need to get a new carpet, you don’t notice how many carpet shops you pass on your journey to work everyday. Where they always there? Until you think you might be pregnant you don’t notice so many folk pushing buggies, then they are everywhere. When you’re hungry but can’t stop to eat, there are food smells, adverts for everything delicious and people eating whichever way you look.

It’s perception. It’s synchronicity. It’s coincidence. It’s whatever you want it to be. But it’s real and it happens all the while. I like to think of it as a sign, a nudge, the universe saying Yup, that’s where we’re going, you’re on track my friend.

Like many folk I’ve spent time recently considering what shape I’d like my 2015 to take, and this includes developing sides of my life that have gone a little wanting in the past. Personal stuff, and largely stuff that could be termed ambition. The put-off-able, for all the reasons.

I saw this cartoon today and it resonated so much with my desires to jump into life with both feet, I gotta share it with you.

Thought forms are the children of an earlier project, my final project in the first year of my art degree. Focussing on the idea of meditation: trying to still the crazed jabbering of monkey mind, find some spaces between the thoughts.

Thought following thought following thought – rattling by. That internal monologue of commentary, judgements, relentless parroting of worries… do you listen to the babble? Do you try to drown it out? Music, TV, incessant banter – some folk don’t keep it inside – they are a non-stop torrent of witterings.

It can be exhausting.

And fascinating.

This piece took shape as a 3 metre x 45 cm relief collage constructed from reclaimed bits and bobs, mostly painted paper, card, pins, tiny scraps of wood, wire, staples. These kinda things. The things and stuff that came to my mind as I was making it. Positioned in a corner it draws the viewer in so they become a part of the work, surrounded by the noise.

Complex trains of thought – interconnected and overlapping – are represented by the darkest and most detailed elements.

The process of meditation calming the mind from the persistent banter of thoughts by suspending this mental chatter from one moment to the next is represented by diminishing detail and lighter tones reducing to nothing in the centre.

I’d love to recreate this on an even bigger scale some day.
