TWELVTY: Episode 1

Every month through 2020 I’m diving deep into one color of the color wheel:
12 colors in 12 months: Beginning in January, with Yellow:

I find inspiration in the everyday things, because color is everywhere.

Look around you now, look next time you’re in traffic or at the shops. Notice the colors in your home, in people’s clothes.

The more you look, the more you’ll see the details that pass most folk by.

Be intrigued, be curious.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

– Marcel Proust

The colour yellow, luminous colour, holds things together, lifts the spirit and raises visions

Show ‘n’ Tell

For TWELVTY this year I’m making a series of small mixed media pieces for each color. They range in size from postcard size (ish) down to really-weeny-small.

At the end of the project I’ll assemble them into some bigger multicolored somethings. For now I’m focussed on one color at a time, and playing with ideas. Every month I’ll share some of my process with you here in this blog.

Here is how my month of yellow took shape.

First Layers

First layers can be splashes of ink, smears of paint, or scribbled doodles in pens and crayons.

First layers are totally freeing – whatever goes here will likely get covered up.

These first marks and shapes break the tension of blank white paper and sew the seeds of all that comes next.

Building Patterns

patterns can be made in color, in texture, collage, cut outs, stitching, folding and crumpling.

Using the patterns and shapes from the first layers, join up the elements and fill in the gaps, decorate the edges or find a motif and repeat it in different sizes or mediums. Or tear it up and glue back the bits in a new way.

Mix, Match, Repeat

Crumpled paper, painted with acrylic craft paint, folded and stitched..

With a squillion different ways to combine these techniques, it’s possible to make heaps of these little pieces, every one unique.

Each one could become an element of a bigger piece later, or be collaged into an art journal or scrap book, or be framed and hung on your wall.

At the end of each TWELVTY episode I’ll set these aside to move on to the next color. At the end of this trip around the color wheel the next adventure begins.

The color wheel is the road map to TWELVTY.
